First, there are three types of wood used for the inside lining of the humidor:
• Spanish cedar (the most popular)
• American or Canadian red cedar
• Honduran mahogany Spanish cedar offers the following advantages (scientific name: “cedrela odorata”)
• Protection against tobacco worms- due to the smell the wood gives off
• High humidity absorption capacity: it provides a stable environment and prevent mold inside the humidor.
• Promotes the aging process of cigars
• It has positive effects on the cigars flavor Spanish cedar is not originally from Spain as it could be assumed; it is imported from Brazil and other countries of South and Central America. In some cases resin is formed on the surface of the wood (See resins in the humidor).
The risk of resin formation can be reduced if the wood is properly dried. American red cedar absorbs less humidity than Spanish cedar and has a more penetrating aroma.
Some humidor manufacturers use it because it is less expensive and with its use there is not resin formation. In general, when cigars are stored for long periods they take a strong woody flavor which is not the desire one.
The Honduran mahogany has a humidity absorption rate similar to that of Spanish cedar and has a less intense smell. Nevertheless, it does not offer the same protection against parasites and the flavor of cigars is not as good as that of Spanish cedar.
The interior veneering should not be treated. It is recommended the use of humidors lined with Spanish cedar for long period of cigars storage. In cabinet humidors other woods with higher humidity absorption can be used because cigars are usually stored in their original Spanish cedar boxes.
If you wish to store them individually in cabinet humidors, it is advisable the use of a Spanish cedar tray. All adorini humidors have been exclusively made of wood lining of Spanish cedar.
